Specimens positive for ANAs with speckled patterns are good candidates for the presence of antibodies to extractable nuclear antigens (ENA). Detecting antibodies to ENA contributes significant diagnostic and prognostic information when evaluating patients suspected of a variety of connective tissue diseases - SLE, Mixed Connective Tissue Disease, Scleroderma, Sjogren's syndrome, polymyositis, etc. The six most useful antibodies tested are anti-RNP, anti-Sm, anti-SSA(R52/Ro60), anti-SSB(La), anti-SCL-70, and anti Jo-1. The anti-ENA screen allows for patient samples to be simultaneously screened for the six anti-ENA antibodies listed. Samples found positive should be tested for these specific ENA autoantibodies. Samples found negative may, in selected cases, need to be tested for other ENA autoantibodies.
