Instructions Due to nationwide shortages of some phlebotomy tubes specified for trace element testing, ARUP Laboratories is currently accepting red top (serum) and lavender (EDTA) tubes as alternative collection tubes. Serum and Plasma MUST be removed from the cells within 2 hours of collection and placed in an ARUP Laboratories "Trace-element" pour off tube.

Specimen prep: Separate from cells ASAP or within 2 hours of collection.
Unacceptable Conditions: Plasma. Specimens that are not separated from the red cells or clot within 2 hours. Specimens collected in containers other than specified. Specimens transported in container other than specified
Stability: If the specimen is drawn and stored in the appropriate container, the trace element values do not change with time.

Diet, medication, and nutritional supplements may introduce interfering substances. Patient should be encouraged to discontinue nutritional supplements, vitamins, minerals, and non-essential over-the-counter medications (upon the advice of their physician).
